While there are hundreds of Kiwibraais in use in NZ, the technical specifications we provide are taken from relevant sections of the Standard AS/NZS 2918:2018 that are specifically for untested fires. (Australian and New Zealand Domestic solid fuel burning appliances – Installation)
If the Braai is going to be positioned beneath a ceiling or going through a roof cavity it will most likely need a triple skinned flue and ceiling heat protection. If the braai is to be built-in then it will need installation specifications to suit. (Contact us so we can help with this or download it from the website). THE HIGHEST RISK: TIMBER FRAMING SAFETY (Mandatory Reading — Absolutely Zero Tolerance for Gaps) Installing a Kiwibraai inside a timber frame structure represents the single highest fire risk of any installation method. Because a timber frame built to NZS 3604:2011 directly surrounds a massive heat source, your thermal barrier must be flawless. The following information is to be read in conjunction with our installation details for installing a Kiwibraai using Concrete Insitu, Block Masonry, Timber Hebel or Timber Heat Shield Installation. (available below or by request). |

- Golden Rule: We highly recommend having your physical Kiwibraai unit on-site before you start any groundwork, slab pouring, or structural framing preparation.
- ATTENTION: All safety clearances separating the outer timber framing from the inner non-combustible barrier assembly (Hebel, Rockwool, Eterpan, Promina, etc.) must be built to at least the minimum gaps specified in the technical drawings.
- Ensure there are no gaps in joints, particularly for Timber Framing, as heat can get through the gaps. A "gap" is any break, seam, crack, or unsealed joint within your non-combustible material shields (e.g., Eterpan, Promina, or Supalux) or ROCKWOOL insulation (fitted as per manufacturers instruction). Even a tiny opening allows intense, trapped radiant heat to escape the enclosure. This heat will directly contact and slowly char hidden timber framing over time, creating an exceptionally high risk of structural fire.
- Stop Heat Transfer on Metal Fixings: Metal conducts heat rapidly. Unsealed bolts, screws, and metal brackets create "thermal bridges" that carry dangerous temperatures straight through your protective boards. You must apply fire sealant over all junctions and metal fixings to completely block and stop the transfer of heat to the underlying timber.
- Cavity Ventilation: When a Braai is enclosed, significant heat builds up in the cavity created around the Braai by the enclosure and must have a way to escape. Install all cavity air vents strictly to the minimum dimensions shown on the technical drawings.
- Combustible Mantels and Shelves: If you choose to dress your Braai face with architectural features, any combustible decorative elements (such as timber mantles, shelves or TVs) will be subject to intense rising heat. Deflecting Rising Heat: For protection against intense rising heat, we highly recommend installing a steel beam or a heat-deflection plate directly below any combustible timber mantelpiece. This acts as a protective thermal shield, intercepting the hot air rolling off the front of the Braai and preventing the wood or anything above from scorching, cracking, melting or drying out over time.
- Door Clearance Flange: Take absolute care that any cladding or load-bearing lintel placement along the front allows a minimum of 20mm space behind the front flange. The upper door requires clear space to fold back slightly past vertical so it stays safely open while you cook.
- After installation and prior to first use of the Braai, ensure an inspection is done to check that there are no gaps and that the installation has been done to our specifications and to any relevant information we have provided to you from the Standard AS/NZS 2918:2018.
